Fragile. Handle with Care.

5.10.2018

In five short weeks, my baby boy will turn 1 year old. Just a few months after that, R will turn 3. It’s truly amazing to me to look back and think about how I’ve been a full-time working mom outside the home for almost 3 years.

I remember like it happened just yesterday sobbing all the way to work after leaving R at daycare for the first time. I remember coming home at the end of the day and nursing her in the rocker. We both fell asleep at 6:00, and then some time later Jordan came and put R in her crib and quietly pulled me out of the nursery. I collapsed on the floor in tears and wailed, “I can’t live like this.” I know that sounds dramatic, but Jordan will tell you that’s exactly what happened. I felt defeated and tired and emotionally drained, and I couldn’t imagine going on for even one more day.

People said it would get easier, but even three years later I can’t decide whether or not I think that’s true. It’s certainly gotten more efficient. I can get myself and both kids changed, fed, and out the door by 8:00 almost every single day, barring a last-minute poop explosion. I almost expect a prize just for showing up to work on time(ish) every day.

It’s easier to recognize the voices that tell me how much I’m missing or how little time I get with them, but it’s not always easier to ignore them.

It’s never easy to leave them in the mornings. But yes, I suppose it’s easier than it used to be, which I say is because I’ve had to build a heart of stone, bracing myself against the tears and the hugs and matter-of-factly putting them down and saying goodbye and walking away. But I often stand at the door like a creeper and watch as long as I can get away with it.

Over the past 3 years I’ve learned that people are so sensitive about the topic of working and staying at home. I knew that was the case, but man it is really the case. I write on this topic to share my experiences and hopefully encourage other working moms, but I also hope to shed some light into the struggles and emotions of working moms for those who aren’t.

The more we all share about our unique situations, I hope the more sensitive we can be to other moms and stop judging and arguing and just support and encourage.

But it’s obviously not as easy as that. I think it would go a long way, however, to try and adjust our phrasing. All moms work, and the phrase “working mom” really is quite problematic when applied to only a specific group of moms. In a similar sense, the phrase “full-time mom” is problematic, implying that those who don’t stay at home aren’t full-time moms. (I wrote more about that here.)

One small way I’ve tried to be more inclusive in my phrasing is when I meet someone, instead of asking if they work, I ask, “Do you work outside the home?” (I do realize there are moms who work at home, but I think overall the phrasing of this question diffuses a lot of defensiveness around the topic.)

The other issue, I think, is that we can all be guilty of assigning intent to something someone said that the other person probably didn’t even mean. It’s those darn voices again.

For example, when you say: “I don’t regret quitting my job to stay at home with my babies,” this is what I hear: “You are going to regret not quitting your job to stay home with your babies."

When you say: “They are only little once. It goes by so fast,” I hear: “You are gone so much and missing all of it. How sad for you."

When you say: “Quitting my job is the best choice for our family,” I hear: “Because you didn’t quit your job, you are choosing yourself over your family."

When you say: "I've made a lot of sacrifices to stay at home with my kids," I hear: "You must not love your kids as much as I do because if you really wanted to, you could make sacrifices too."

Are these true things to think? Do they even make sense? Not really. But our hearts and minds can play tricks on us, and mine sure have played a lot of tricks over the past 3 years.

I had a very special and powerful moment last year when I strongly felt God’s voice speaking to me, telling me that he saw me, he understood me, and he loved me just as I was. This is a different situation entirely, but it reminds me of when Jordan and I were in the Bahamas in 2015, and God very clearly appeared in a situation where we felt scared and alone.

Over the past 3 years of writing about by experiences working in my office job and being a mom to R and J, I have no doubt offended or hurt some of you by something I’ve said. I try to be extremely careful in my phrasing and the way I write about this topic, but I know I haven’t always done that perfectly. And that’s because I’m not perfect. Shocker, I know.

It’s been 3 years; some days I’m okay with working, and other days I’m really not okay with it. Some days I feel like I’m doing what God has called me to do, and other days I wonder why on earth I’m wasting time sitting in an office when my kids are smiling and laughing without me 10 miles away.

When I went on our women’s retreat last month, one of the speakers was in a wheelchair due to a brain stem stroke she experienced when she was 26. She can stand up for short periods of time and walk with assistance short distances, but otherwise she is completely contained to her wheelchair. I was so encouraged by her session, and a few things she said have stayed with me, but one I want to share here.

She said that she was talking with a friend who said that when people see a wheelchair, it’s like if you were wearing a shirt that said, “I’m fragile. Handle me with care.” And Katherine said, “My wheelchair is a physical reminder to people that I’m fragile, but don’t we all want that shirt? Aren’t we all fragile and want people to handle us with care?"

I think we forget sometimes that no one is as secure or put together or content in their life as it seems. We are all fragile, and moms especially (although I know much of this is true for anyone, mom or not) can be easily barraged by voices poking at all the ways we are failing our kids, all the ways we don’t measure up with our house décor and our decorated front porches and our choice of where to send our kids to school.

It’s just freaking hard to be a human sometimes.

We need more support from one another. We need more encouragement online and in person. And guys, we need more Jesus. We need to read our Bibles and pray and cover ourselves with the truth to combat the voices telling us we aren’t good enough.

Seriously, get off Instagram and open your Bible. Start anywhere. I am reading through the Bible this year and am currently in Judges. There’s a lot of weird crap that happens in the Old Testament, but the metanarrative speaks to how much God loves us. The people of Israel messed up a lot. Like, a lot a lot. And God keeps protecting them and fighting for them and keeping his promises to them. He wants to do the same for you.

So listen to me: you are doing a great job and you are an awesome mom.

If you work in an office, if you work at home, if you work taking care of littles, if you work for yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back and go tell someone else they are awesome today.

And don’t forget: We are all a bit fragile. Handle with care.

By the Numbers: 2015

12.31.2015

^^^A sunset from this year. No filter.

By some miracle, I actually hit my goal of reading 20 books this year. Admittedly, 20 is not a very large number for me, but considering the fact that I had a baby in August, I'm very okay with it. My final two reads of 2015 were rereads! I am all about rereading my favorite books, and I definitely ended the year on a high note after more than a few duds (find me on Goodreads to read my reviews).

The last two books I read were rereads, but everything else was new.
Of the 18 books I read this year for the first time, here are my two favorites:

All the Light We Cannot See. A-mazing. I know some people who didn't like this one, and while normally I'm all about personal preference, I just don't get how anyone could read this and not love it. It's so good.

The Husband's Secret. This one is a good travel book for reading on a plane (which is exactly where I read it). It was interesting but not super intense, so it didn't need a lot of concentration.

Here were my top two duds:

The Girl on the Train. I'm sorry, but I could not handle this one. I know it was all the rage, but just no. I literally wanted the main character to get HIT BY THE TRAIN so the book would end and I could move on with my life.

Faithful Place. This is one of Tana French's murder/mystery books, and it was by far my least favorite of the four I've read. I found the story pointless and just kind of wished I hadn't wasted my time.

Last year I logged every single mile I ran in Daily Mile. This year I didn't do nearly as well logging miles, and I ran a ton without my Garmin watch, so it's hard to say exactly how far I ran this year. I logged officially over 200 miles, and then there's a bunch that weren't logged, so maybe 250 miles this year, I'm guessing. Not too bad! I ran consistently until 24 weeks pregnant (and ran 2 half marathons at 10 and 18 weeks!), and then I took a break until 6 weeks post baby. I've blogged about post-partem running here and also some here if you're interested.

In 2016, I have one race lined up so far: the 2016 Oklahoma City Half Marathon in April. This will be my 10th half marathon! I also would really like to run a few local 5ks, and there is a 10k in early April that I might do as well. I hope to find a way to fit running into my schedule but also be realistic about it, and I plan on keeping you updated on any progress!

30x30 list items completed: 3

I am really excited about this!
I didn't think I crossed anything off this year until I was looking at my list.
Here's what I did:

-Buy a bedroom dresser
-Organize my recipes
And the big kahuna:
-BUY A HOUSE. That happened.

Also....

I cannot forget to mention the fact that I spent the majority of this year pregnant. From announcing Baby Bum on the blog to sharing a few baby bump updates to writing out her birth story, it's been a heck of a ride. Everyone talks about it, and I've discovered for myself that it's cliche but true: you just cannot imagine the love you feel for your baby. I look at her and cry because she's so beautiful and she's for me to keep! I still can't believe it.

I'm looking forward to settling in a bit, both with our baby and in our new house and in our new routine with me back at work. I have been so incredibly blessed, and I am so thankful for all God has entrusted to me.

Thanks for sticking with me this month as I took some time off from the blog. I hope to get back to posting 2x a week in 2016. I realize that I can't expect you to keep coming here with such sporadic posting, and I definitely do not want to just pop in once a month with an R update. My plan is to try and post every Tuesday and Friday, just so you will have some idea of when to check back for new material. Of course, my time with R will become even more precious once I'm not hanging out with her all day every day, so blogging will not be my main priority. However, I do love it and want to continue to share pictures and happenings. It's fun to look back on for me, and I hope it is fun for you to read!

Here's to 2016! I hope you have a safe and fun New Year's.

*Project 12: A photo on the first day of every month*

The Husband's Secret: 3.5 stars
Fluffy read that I felt would be good for the beach. The story was interesting, and I did not feel like the secret was a letdown. Some cursing and non-graphic sex scenes, just FYI.

Gathering Blue: 3 stars
The book took a while to get going, and then just when it was getting interesting, it was over, so that was kind of a bummer. But interesting story!

^^^This is our old bedroom in our apartment.

WE MOVED! This is a huge and notable event in our lives. I may or may not find time to write a post about the moving process, but here's the bottom line: moving has been a very stressful process for us. I kind of want to hit people when they say, "Have fun moving!" That is not a thing, okay?

Last month we paid rent and mortgage plus double on all our utilities, and our budget did not like that. I'm happy to be paying just one of everything now, and hopefully the more stuff we unpack the more this place will feel like home and not just like we're sleeping over in someone else's house. I feel severely overwhelmed with the amount of things we need to find places for, not to mention a baby is coming soon and will need a mattress for her crib. So yeah.
I hit 30 weeks pregnant! People keep asking me how I'm feeling, and I keep saying great! I seriously feel really good, minus a few aches and pains. You can read my 33-week bump update here.

^^^ We put the crib together! And by we, I mean Jordan, his brother, and his dad put the crib together while I watched. The nursery has nothing on the walls or anything really in place, but at least we have a crib now.
^^^Another notable event was eating Sonic shakes like four times last month. We were cracking up because we had just been saying, "Ice cream sounds good," when a Sonic commercial came on TV for half-prices shakes after 8:00. Marketing for the win.

We waited until halftime of the Blackhawks game (holler! Stanley Cup champions!) and drive to Sonic, where we were DUMB and ordered Sonic blasts instead of shakes and therefore paid full price. Sonic: 1, Bumgarners: 0.
Our big travel event was a trip to the Bahamas the first weekend of June.

We also went to an Oklahoma City minor league baseball game for a friend's birthday.

In June we were mostly focused on packing and moving, and we spent more than a few nights overwhelmed and stressed out. We are now in our new house, and July is birthday month for both of us, so it hopefully should be a good one! We're hoping Baby Bum keeps cooking and doesn't make an extra early appearance. I really just don't think I could handle all three of us sharing a birthday month. Truth.

Scenes from downtown Nassau, Bahamas (plus a video!)

7.05.2015

In my last Bahamas post, I showed you some pictures from the Atlantis resort. On Monday afternoon, we had the opportunity to take a bus into downtown Nassau to eat lunch and spend an hour or so walking around the shops. It inspired confidence that our bus had a giant dent across the front.
^^^ They drive on the other side of the road in the Bahamas (and by "other side of the road" I mean for us American folk). These "yield" signs were cracking me up. Driving there reminded us of the crazy drivers in Nicaragua!
I told you last time that one thing that surprised me was that Atlantis is like its own little area of the island. We had to drive over this bridge to get outside Atlantis and into the downtown area. What stood out to me the most was just how colorful everything is. I mentioned the color of the water in my last post, but in Nassau we got to see how colorful the streets and buildings are. It was so fun!
We ate lunch at this absolutely delicious place right off the water where some cruise ships were docked. It had the best view, music, and food and was personally one of my highlights of the trip.
After lunch, we walked around a bit and enjoyed some scenes from the island. We watched some guys diving for puff fish and conch shells. Fresh from the ocean!
In conclusion, I put together a short (less than 2 minutes) video! It's not the greatest quality because when I uploaded it to YouTube something funky happened. Movie editing is not in my skill set.

Also, apparently the "Under the Sea" song I used for 30 seconds at the beginning is copyrighted, so this video is blocked in Germany...? Random. Also x2, YouTube says "ads might appear" on the video because of the song, so sorry if that happens. But I'm too lazy to change it now so just deal with it.

If you can't see it on the blog, view the video on YouTube here.

*If you can't hear some of the audio in the second half, Jordan and I asked each other: "What is your favorite memory from the trip?" Jordan said the color of the water and meeting the OBGYN in the line for pizza. I said walking around Atlantis and seeing the OBGYN. Because I will never stop talking about that.

Scenes from the Bahamas!

6.25.2015

The first weekend of June, Jordan and I spent two days and three nights at the Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas. This is most definitely not the kind of vacation we would typically go on, but I was actually going for work, and my boss offered employees the opportunity to take plus ones, provided we paid for the plane ticket and food ourselves. But my food, flight, and hotel were paid for, so we figured we might as well make it a babymoon/anniversary/birthday celebration since we will likely never be able to afford to stay at Atlantis if we were paying for it all ourselves.

You might be wondering what on earth kind of work takes their employees to the Bahamas, and while I really just don't feel comfortable discussing the specifics of my job, I will say that I work for a company that puts on events in different locations around the world, and so this was in essence a site visit and staff planning retreat. I was in meetings both days we were there, but I was really pleased to find that we did have a fair amount of free time to wander about on our own and hit the beach.
Thankfully, we had already gotten passports last year in preparation for our missions trip to Nicaragua, so that was one less thing we needed to worry about. I was really excited to get to use it this year, since I obviously won't be going back this summer to Nicaragua.

We left Saturday at noon, had a few-hour layover in Atlanta, and landed in the Bahamas around 8:00 that night. After checking into the room, Jordan changed clothes and indulged in some ESPN (we don't have cable, so any time we stay in a hotel he gets excited about all the extra channels) while I headed out to a work reception.
We both decided our favorite thing about the Caribbean is how colorful everything is, starting with the water. This picture is completely unedited! Aren't those colors amazing?

This picture was taken with my camera's self-timer. This was the view from our porch! Atlantis is actually a resort complex with four hotels. The iconic "bridge" hotel is what you see in the background. That's the super fancy hotel.
Atlantis is almost indescribable. I just keep telling everyone that it seemed very surreal to be walking around, almost like it wasn't real life. Everything is colorful, the water is so blue, and there are fish everywhere. And not just fish fish like we think--sharks and stingrays and jellyfish and giant fish I'd never heard of before. You could walk underneath Atlantis and see aquariums or walk above. People were in the tanks with scuba gear on walking with the sharks, children were petting baby sharks, people were drinking cocktails and carrying inner tubes and going down slides.
I guess I hadn't really thought about what Atlantis would be like, but it definitely wasn't anything like I would have thought it would be. For one thing, I didn't realize Atlantis was its own resort. To even walk around in certain areas and do certain things you needed either a wristband or a room key. All four hotels are connected, and as you walk through they get more and more fancy. There's a giant casino in the middle, and I totally gambled for the first time ever! I played two different slot games and lost $2. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it was fun pulling the handle! (Note: My work did not pay for gambling at the casino; we wasted our own $2 on that.)
We really didn't spend too much time on the actual beach. It was kind of a downer that I was 30 weeks pregnant, because walking on the beach took it out of me quick. Don't let these pictures of our smiling faces fool you... it. was. hot.

Also, I wasn't too impressed with the sand on the beach. Maybe it was just the part we walked on, but we both found it pretty rough. There were lots of tiny shells and some rocks, and I've definitely walked on softer sand (I'm talking to you, Hawaii!). Still, you just can't complain about the color of that water. And I haven't been to the beach in so long! I love the sound of it.
^^^ GIANT FISH! Seriously, what on earth? This was in one of the underground tunnel aquariums. It was nice to escape the heat and go underground for bit. It smelled fishy (literally), but it was nice and cool down there.

I did rock a bikini and get in the ocean for approximately 4.2 minutes. Then I got tired of trying to tread water in the waves with my nonexistent abs, and I got out. (Then later that night the whole contraction thing happened. Thus, I have no choice but to blame salt walter.)
^^^On the last night, we walked down to the marina and ate dinner at a seafood restaurant. I used Jordan's head as a tripod to take this shot. People were staring.

On Tuesday, our last morning in the Bahamas, I got up early to watch the sunrise. There were a few people out running along the sidewalk next to the beach, and I totally wished I could have done that, but it was really nice to just watch the sun rise over the ocean. There's just something so calming about listening to the waves on the beach.

I definitely think being 30 weeks pregnant (and therefore not being able to do any of the slides and things) and having The Episode occur clouded our overall impression of the trip, but Atlantis is certainly was an experience all of its own, and all in all, we were very excited to have the chance to spend a few days in the Bahamas together.

***See part 2 from the Bahamas here.
There's a video I put together of some scenes from our trip!
